{(’L’Entrée (The Opening)}
Amid a global migration between physical and virtual worlds, L'Entrée explores the increasingly complex relationship between human bodies and digital representation. A transmedia installation, L’Entrée reveals virtual sculptures in pedestrianized areas, creating a dialogue between organic movement and computational interpretation.
The sculptures, created in a game engine with photogrammetry, motion capture, and computational averaging, perform virtual "dances" that showcase extraordinary sculptural detail—a testament to the precision of cutting-edge tools. Each form manifests as a digital echo of human movement, where technological accuracy meets physical expression.
The installation's spatial sound design, interwoven with spoken word, creates an acoustic bridge between the tangible and virtual realms. As viewers navigate the work, they experience a carefully orchestrated tension between their physical presence and the digital environment. Material sculptures, high-resolution prints, and site-specific localization anchor the experience in the physical world, while augmented reality blurs the boundaries between real and virtual space.
Central to L'Entrée is an examination of how contemporary technologies capture, parse, and regulate the vital human body in an era of increasing virtualization. The work reveals both the beauty of digital precision and the subtle human characteristics that resist digitization. A bent knee, a twisted elbow: such "imperfections" become material reminders of our humanity, even as our movements are increasingly surveilled, averaged, and immortalized in virtual space. While capturing technologies present as neutral observers, their deployment fundamentally shapes how we move through and inhabit our bodies in space.
L’Entrée features movement by Françoise Voranger and Andrea (Nikki) Ortiz of Hybrid Movement Company, and music and sound by Matt McCorkle.
L’Entrée (The Opening) has been commissioned by the AHRC-funded GLoW3 project led by Professor Sarah Atkinson from King’s College London’s Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries, Faculty of Arts & Humanities and is supported by King’s Culture.
